4. An Extensible System for Conversion of Musical-Notation Data to Braille Musical Notation

Abstract:

In research for an undergraduate honors thesis ("A Representation and Conversion System for Musical Notation," Cambridge University, 2000), I attempted to develop an extensible data-conversion system which takes user-supplied grammar definitions to generate parsers that read files of encoded musical data and transform them into an unordered collection of facts in what is here called a tuple space. The tuple space is transformed into the output by interpreting a specially designed imperative language. This language contains primitives for dividing the tuple space into subgroups. It also runs code on each group to generate output of all symbols in a given category whose associated expressions are true for the current tuples and to group the output data into blocks and format them onto pages. Text is handled separately by a pluggable literary handler for the appropriate language and character set. The whole is tied together by an attributes database that ensures that the use of attributes is consistent across input parsers and output formatters; other methods, such as arbitration in the tuple space, are speculated on.
